If you are considering a period of study abroad and have not chosen any of the foreign universities or other educational institutions involved in the established Charles University mobility programmes, you can try a number of other schemes: this page contains a regularly updated list of international offers. The stays listed below are organized by foreign universities or research institutions, educational foundations, institutions with links to foreign embassies, non-profit NGOs etc. Some of the stays are partly or wholly funded by the host institution; in other cases, however, the applicants are expected to cover the cost themselves.

• The PHD internship in the European Central Bank

  Your team

  You will be part of the Supply Side, Labour and Surveillance Division in the Directorate General Economics. We are a team of around 30 experts responsible for conducting analysis of the euro area labour market and long-term drivers of economic growth, including productivity, as well as cross-country analysis of macroeconomic vulnerabilities. We also look at economic issues relating to EU governance, with a focus on Next Generation EU and the deepening of Economic and Monetary Union. Our most recent work has focused on the drivers of labour market developments, the role of structural changes (such as digitalisation, demographic changes and climate change) in the euro area economy and the impact of government policies to support the economy.

   In your role as a PhD trainee, you will contribute to empirical work in the areas of labour markets, firm productivity, long-term drivers of economic growth and macroeconomic risks and vulnerabilities in the euro area.

  Your role

  As a PhD trainee you will:

  • support the Division’s analytical agenda on key policy questions;
  • conduct empirical analyses using state-of-the-art economic and econometric models;
  • help to enhance analytical, econometric and forecasting tools under the supervision of ECB experts;
  • have the opportunity to submit the resulting papers for publication in the ECB’s Working Paper Series and academic journals.

   You will be expected to complete your tasks using your own initiative and to work largely autonomously under the supervision of an expert. You will have access to the ECB’s library, as well as to computing and statistical resources. You will also have access to most ECB-organised conferences and internal seminars.

   The traineeship offers you excellent opportunities to develop your skills by using state-of-the-art modelling and econometric techniques and to contribute to policy work that is highly relevant to the Division’s economic assessments. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

  Qualifications, experience and skills

  Essential: 

  • a master’s degree and at least two years of PhD studies in economics, finance, statistics, data science or a related field;
  • a sound understanding of, and theoretical background in, macroeconomics and the economic and institutional context in which the ECB fulfils its mandate;
  • excellent knowledge of, and a track record in, state-of-the-art modelling tools and econometric techniques or data analytics;
  • programming skills in one or more of the following software packages: MATLAB, Stata, Python, R or Julia;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

   Desired: 

  • experience in one of the following: applied microeconometrics for the labour market, corporate finance and firm dynamics; applied time series for empirical macroeconomics; panel data analysis for empirical macroeconomics; dynamic stochastic general equilibrium modelling (including heterogeneous agent models); machine learning techniques.

   You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

   You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

   

  Further information

  Initial PhD traineeship of four months, with a possible extension to up to 12 months in total. The traineeship is expected to start in 2026.

• DAAD - Konrad Zuse Schools of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence

  The research and training programme focuses on the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of reliable AI along with domain knowledge in 3 core application domains, for which reliable AI methods are most urgently needed: medicine and healthcare, robotics & interacting systems, and algorithmic decision-making. relAI scholarships are intended to support outstanding students who are studying AI related subjects so they are able to focus on their studies. relAI offers a cross-sectional training for successful education in AI including scientific knowledge, professional development courses and industrial exposure, providing a coherent, yet flexible and personalised training. The scholarship is mainly awarded based on academic excellence, but also aims to improve internationalisation and diversity in AI related teaching programmes.

  Requirements: Master´s students pursuing studies in AI and related subject. Highly qualified students with excellent results.

  Duration: 24 months

  Scholarship: 934 EUR/month

• National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic (NSPSR)

  The National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic (NSPSR) offers scholarships to students and academics, scientific and artistic staff for stays in the summer semester 2025.The length of stays for MSP students is 1 to 2 semesters, for DSP students and postdoctoral fellows 1 to 10 months.

• Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

  Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to encourage international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. These scholarships are available to postgraduate researchers in any discipline wishing to pursue research at any Swiss cantonal university, university of applied sciences, either of Switzerland’s two federal institutes of technology (ETHZ or EPFL) or at one of the four research institutes within the ETH Domain (PSI, WSL, Empa, Eawag).

  The amount of the scholarship is 1920 CHF / 3500 CHF.

• KAAD Eastern Europe Programme

  The Eastern Europe Programme supports PhD and Master's programmes, as well as shorter study and research stays in Germany. Applicants from all countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus and of Catholic denomination (in exceptional cases also of another Christian denomination, provided they are proposed by Catholic partners) can apply for scholarships as described below:

  • Postgraduates with a Bachelor's degree who wish to pursue a Master's degree at a German university (max. 24 months). Tuition fees for fee-based Master's degree programmes can be funded in justified exceptional cases.
  • Young academics who are working towards a PhD degree in Germany (max. 36 months)
  • Young academics who are working on a doctorate or habilitation in their home country and are planning a research stay in Germany (up to 12 months)
  • Postgraduates who are planning a research stay or a deepening of existing scientific knowledge in Germany after having completed their examination in their home country or who are planning a non-consecutive postgraduate or supplementary course of study (this also applies to further training for licensed medical practitioners).
  • University teachers who are planning a research stay (up to 6 months) in Germany.
  • Students in Master's programmes in their home country who are planning a study visit (up to 6 months) to collect material at a university in Germany.
