Exams and Grading System
Examination period at FSV UK
The exam period at FSV UK takes place at the end of each semester. As per the academic calendar for exchange students (HERE), the winter semester exam period is usually from mid-January to mid-February, while the summer semester exam period usually runs from second half of May until 30 June.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR EXAMS?
You need to register online through the SIS.
Click on the Exam Dates - Register and then select the dates when you want to take the exam. You can change your registration in My dates.
This does not apply to courses where you only need to submit an essay.
Always check the exam requirements and need to register with the teacher.

How do I register for exams for my courses at other CU faculties?
When you log into SIS, use the "work with subjects" menu in the top right corner. As you can see in the snippet below, you can choose a faculty there. Simply select the other CU faculty where you have enrolled a course. Then follow the same set of steps to register for an exam date.
-
Can I take exams before the official exam period?
Pre-exam dates are up to the teachers themselves. Ask them at the beginning of the semester.
Teachers start uploading the exam dates for the winter semester as of 1 December and for the summer semester as of 1 April, as per the academic calendar.
-
Exam retakes - are they possible?
As per the CU Faculty of Social Sciences rule, you can use up to 2 retakes during the exam period - retakes are not possible after the exam period.
Retakes are possible ONLY if you FAIL. In case you passed the exam, but are not happy with the grade, we are sorry to tell you that you are not eligible for the retake.

Types of exams (Ex, C, MC)
At the end of the semester, a course can be ended with different types of evaluation (described in SIS in the column Examination):
Exam, written or oral "Ex" in SIS FSV UK uses the internationally recognised A-F grading system (see below) Pass/Fail "C" in SIS the course does not conclude in an exam, there is a different way of obtaining the credit (e.g. an essay, a project, written analysis, etc.)
NOTE: The grading is Pass/Fail. Do you need a grade instead of Pass/Fail? Talk to the academic during the first class to arrange it in advance!Pass/Fail with grade "MC" in SIS the same as Pass/Fail (submission of an essay, project, etc.) but automatically with a grade -
Grading system at FSV UK
The grading system can be slightly different for each faculty of Charles University. The Faculty of Social Sciences uses the internationally recognised A-F grading system, often referred to as ECTS grading. For easier understanding, we offer an explanation of the individual grades:
- A/B – Excellent - excellent performance
- C/D – Very Good - above the average standard with some errors
- E – Good - generally sound work with a number of notable errors
- F – Fail - unsatisfactory performance
To evaluate the student's performance in percentage (0-100 %) and provide the evaluation accordingly, the recommendation for using the A-F classification is as follows:
91 - 100 % A 81 - 90 % B 71 - 80 % C 61 - 70 % D 51 - 60 % E 0 - 50 % F -
