Before Departure

Before Departure

Before you set out from home, pay attention to these tips.

  • Fill up your prescriptions

If you take any regularly prescribed medication, we strongly recommend filling up your prescriptions before you arrive. Consider that some medication cannot be sold over the counter in Czechia and you will need to register with a GP or a specialist to get your prescriptions. This may take some time, so you’ll want to make sure that you have enough medication on hand in the meantime. This includes some allergy medication, contraceptives or antidepressants.
General medication for basic allergy, mild painkillers, cold, flu, stomach issues, etc. is sold over the counter without issues.

  • Secure your health insurance

Make sure that you have valid comprehensive health insurance before you arrive in Prague. This is mandatory for all foreigners in Czechia, regardless of their citizenship. For students coming with a visa, this is also part of the visa-seeking process, so you will need to purchase the insurance before you receive the visa. For EU, EEA and EFTA citizens, your EHIC card will be sufficient, but it is recommended that you register it with a Czech insurance company. Read more about the health insurance basics here.

  • Be ready for the weather

You probably know that the weather in Czechia is quite mild most of the time, and that we experience all four seasons during the year. However, please be aware that the semester starts in October and the autumn is usually at full swing at that time. This means beautiful colourful views and walks in the leaves, but also dropping temperature (to around 5-12°C) and earlier sunsets.

Students coming from sunny and hot countries can sometimes be surprised that there is less sun than they are used to and as the semester progresses, the days will get shorter and colder. We strongly recommend taking vitamin D supplements, which greatly reduce the effects of the lack of the sun. We also recommend making sure that you have the appropriate clothes for the weather - students from warmer countries can feel the cold quicker than the locals.

  • Consider getting a Buddy

Would you like to find a guide to help you with your beginnings in Prague? You can request a Buddy, a local volunteering student.

  • Register online for the first year

The first step of your enrollment is done online at the very beginning of September.

Why is this important? This is how you become an enrolled student and let us know that you truly want to study the program! It will also open the system where you will later register for courses for you.

    1. You have to submit an online request for registration via your online application. Download this document, fill in the Enrolment form, print it, and sign it. Scan it (a legible photo is also acceptable) and attach the scan as a single attachment to the official request. Fill in the short reasoning and submit the request. You can find the manual for online registration here
Note: Make sure to choose "Application for Distance Registration", NOT "Other application".

For more details, this process is described in the first step of our registration guide.
