Get familiar with the Faculty buildings
Charles university is quite an old institution, which also means that it has grown slowly over the centuries and acquired many buildings all around Prague. The Faculty of Social Sciences itself is spread in three main buildings.
- Jinonice campus - the main new campus we have opened just recently. You will find it at the Jinonice metro station (yellow B line). This is where Institutes of Sociological Studies, Political Studies and International Studies are located, so classes related to these fields are also mostly held there. It houses our main library, as well.
- Hollar building - located in the city centre. This is where the Dean's office, International office, and other administrative centers of the university reside. It is also a home to the Institute of Media and Journalism and their classes.
- Opletalova building - can be found right next to the Wenceslas square and mostly houses the Institute of Economic studies and their courses.
Lost something in a Faculty building?
Items found in the premises of faculty buildings are collected at their reception desks, where they are stored for 30 days. If they are not collected within this period, the items are moved to the storeroom of the Building Management Office. For more information, please contact the reception desks of the faculty buildings at the following telephone numbers:
- Jinonice Campus +420 267 224 111
- Hollar Building +420 222 112 111
- Opletalova Building +420 222 112 303

Get around FSV UK libraries
FSV UK runs two libraries: the main library at the Jinonice campus and an economics-focused library at the Opletalova building. There is also a small Student zone with a self-service collection of media and sociology literature at the Hollar building, and a large database of e-resources.
Our librarians have prepared a comprehensive page with all the important information you need to know at the beginning
As an FSV UK student, you can also borrow books from other Faculties’ libraries. You can also use national and municipal libraries around Prague, usually free of charge or for a small fee. -
Know the most important study rules
There are a couple of very important rules that you need to keep in mind when you choose and pass your courses during your study. Not following them will unfortunately result in a termination of your study:
- The maximum study period is 6 academic years for Bachelor programs and 5 academic years for Master programs.
- You can only register for a mandatory course or a recommended elective twice during your study.
- For each course, you have max. 3 attempts to pass the final exam. I.e., you have six attempts in total to pass the mandatory courses.
- For each year of study, there is a set minimum of credits that you must obtain in order to continue in the next academic year. In the first year, the minimum is 45 credits. The system checks this once a year in September.

Get IT support and check out Moodle
There is an IT support office in each building of FSV UK. You can also always email them at support@fsv.cuni.cz. They can help you with lost passwords, technical issues with your accounts, wifi, etc.
Moodle is an e-learning portal through which many teachers share course materials and readings, and where you can also submit your assignments. Not all teachers use Moodle to share resources, but many do - you will learn this during the first lesson. The link for Moodle can usually be found in the SIS syllabus. The login and password for Moodle are the same as for your SIS account.
-
Get moving
FSV UK unfortunately does not organize our own sports courses, but you can join courses arranged by the Faculties of Arts and Law. They offer a wide range of group sports classes for one semester.
If you prefer to work out alone, you may be interested in a Multisport card for students.
Check out this page for more on both options.

Study languages
If you are interested in taking a language class, you can take one organized by the Language centre of FSV UK. Once you find a course you like, you can register for it during the SIS registration period through “Enrollment (My Own)” with the course code.
We recommend first checking the study plan of your program to see if you already have any elective/mandatory language courses in your curriculum.
Czech for foreigners classes are free for students of English Bachelor and Master programs. This does not apply to short-term exchange students.
