The DAAD is an association of German universities based in Bonn and Berlin. There are DAAD Regional Offices in 15 countries. The DAAD network includes more than 50 information centres and information points on all continents. In the Czech Republic the DAAD is active since 1963. In 2000 there was an Information centre in Prague founded (today´s DAAD Information Point Prague).

Since it was founded, around two million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. The DAAD is a registered association and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies. Its activities go far beyond simply awarding grants and scholarships. The DAAD supports the internationalisation of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, assists developing countries in establishing effective universities and advises decision makers on matters of cultural, education and development policy.
Its budget is derived mainly from the federal funding for various ministries, primarily the German Federal Foreign Office, but also from the European Union and a number of enterprises, organisations and foreign governments.

AKTION Czech Republic – Austria is a programme funding bilateral cooperation in education and research at the tertiary level. It was launched in 1992 as a joint programme of both countries’ Ministries of Education.

The programme AKTION is focused on fostering mutual understanding between the Czech Republic and Austria. It supports the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in research and education in all scientific areas.  The programme funds cooperation projects which aim to enhance new cooperation as well as to boost the existing cooperation. It supports projects involving young researchers and projects which are promising in terms of also receiving financial support from other funds (EU programmes, etc.).

Two types of activities are supported:

  •   individual – study and research internship scholarships for the stay in the second country and for participation in the summer language courses and summer schools.
  •   institutional – funding of cooperation projects of Czech and Austrian higher education institutions; see the guidelines for project proposal submission, financing and conclusion.
