Grading System
Grading System
The Charles University offers courses that can end with two types of study requirements:
- "ZÁPOČET"/PASS
This means that a course is not ended with an exam, but a different way of obtaining the credit, e.g. an essay, a project, written analysis, etc.
The grading system is two tier - Pass/Fail. In the system, you will see this as Z, which means "Zápočet" or Pass.
- EXAM
The course is finished with an oral or written exam. Faculty of Social Sciences uses an internationally recognized A-F grading system, often referred to as ECTS grading.
For easier understanding we offer an explanation of the individual grades:
- A/B – Excellent - excellent performance
- C/D – Very Good - above the average standard with some errors
- E – Good - generally sound work with a number of notable errors
- F – Fail - unsatisfactory performance
The recommendation for using the A-F classification is as follows: To evaluate the student's performance in percentage (0-100 %) and providing the evaluation accordingly:
100-91% = A
90-81% = B
71-80 % = C
61-70 % = D
51-60 % = E
0-50% = F
CALCULATING GPA
You can find your GPA along with the total number of credits in your SIS.
After logging in, go to "Summary of exam results". Make sure to check all the academic years of your study in the filter. At the bottom of the page in grey, you will see the total amound of your credits as well as the total average.
The GPA is calculated on a scale of 1.0 to 4.0 where 1.0 is the best possible result.
All exam results are counted towards the GPA based on this transition table from 1-4 Grades to ECTS Grades.
Czech Grade | ECTS Grade |
1 - Excellent (excellent performance) | A/B |
2 - Very Good (above the average standard but with some errors) | C/D |
3 - Good (generally sound work with a number of notable errors) | E |
4 - Fail (unsatisfactory performance) | F |
Courses transfered from your previous study are not counted in your GPA. However, grades obtained at an exchange stay are counted.
