Lecture invitation: New rules, new challenges
Join us for a lecture titled "New rules, new challenges: prospects for conflict mediation in a changing international system." The lecture and subsequent Q&A will be held by Paul Dziatkowiec, Director of Mediation and Peace Support at the prestigious Geneva Centre for Security Policy.
The nature of conflict is evolving in the rapidly changing international landscape. There are more inter- and intra-state conflicts than we have seen in decades, and more of them are characterised by proxy warfare. Big powers are pushing for ‘band-aid solutions’ or transactional deals rather than sustainable, comprehensive peace agreements. At the same time, inter-governmental institutions such as the UN and OSCE are sometimes marginalised from playing a meaningful peacemaking role, although that was their primary mandate in decades past. In this environment, does the contemporary mediator still possess an appropriate toolkit for responding to the new ways of conflict, or do we need to rethink the methods and utility of mediation?
