Can I take exams before the official Exam period?

Pre-exam dates are up to the teachers themselves. Ask them at the beginning of the semester.

Teachers start uploading the exam dates for the winter semester as of 1st December and for the summer semester as of 1st April.

HOW DOES THE GRADING SYSTEM WORK AT CHARLES UNIVERSITY?

The grading system can be slightly different for each faculty of Charles University.

Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University (FSV UK) has an internationally recognized A-F grading system, often referred to as ECTS grading.

For easier understanding we offer an explanation of the individual grades:

  • A/B – Excellent - excellent performance
  • C/D – Very Good - above the average standard with some errors
  • E – Good - generally sound work with a number of notable errors
  • F – Fail - unsatisfactory performance
  • Z – Pass/Credit - where a course is completed by a study requirement other than examination, it is not graded, but is recorded as “Zápočet (Z).” This is in effect a Pass in a two-tier Pass/Fail grading system.

The recommendation for using the A-F classification is as follows: To evaluate the student's performance in percentage (0-100 %) and providing the evaluation accordingly:

100-91% = A

90-81% = B

71-80 % = C

61-70 % = D

51-60 % = E

0-50% = F

In case you have courses at other faculties, here is a transition table from 1-4 Grades to ECTS Grades.

Czech Grade ECTS Grade
1 - Excellent (excellent performance)                                    A/B
2 - Very Good (above the average standard but with some errors)           C/D
3 - Good (generally sound work with a number of notable errors) E
4 - Fail (unsatisfactory performance) FX/F

Pass (student achievements in some subjects are graded only as "pass",

where a student has obtained a satisfactory level)

Pass
