HISTORY AND AREA STUDIES (HAS)

The programme curriculum combines the education in modern history and area studies and the Czech language education. The Czech language courses proceeds from the basic grammar and vocabulary to the advanced level of Czech to be reached by the end of the studies. Modern history and area studies mandatory courses aims to give a broad overview of major topics in contemporary Central European history, culture, politics, and economics, thus providing a solid background for more in-depth study of selected topics in the elective courses. Bachelor thesis seminars prepare student for the selection of the topic of the thesis and provide a guide for writing the thesis.

What is the programme about?

History and Area Studies programme focuses on modern history, culture and politics with respect to the Czech Republic in Central European and global context. It combines the education in history and area studies with an active training of the Czech language. English language helps to get knowledge (in lectures) while Czech language is designed first as a language which is taught, and secondly as a language employed in the seminar debate on topics taught in English (from the second year of studies).

Who is the programme for?

We welcome applicants with a good command of written and spoken English (a non-native speaker applicant has to include a copy of an internationally recognised certificate in English) who have a keen interest in the fields of area studies and modern history, Central Europe, and Czech language.

Future Careers

After completion of HAS, the graduates will be endowed by a solid knowledge of contemporary Central European history and culture as well as by the Czech language at a B2 level. They will be able to analyse individual topics arising within the Central European region in terms of modern history, political science, international relations, and culture. The HAS graduates will be able to understand current issues in their historical, societal, political, and cultural context. Mastering Czech language, they will be capable of reflecting local debate and local perspectives on global level.

They will be able to employ the language as well as the acquired knowledge in an everyday use and to develop and cultivate them in the continuing study in the field of humanities and social sciences or in the professional field of the state administration, cultural institutions, NGOs or media.
