Key Study Regulations

Key Study Regulations

Study at the Faculty of Social Sciences is governed by the Higher Education Act, the Code of Study and Examination of Charles University and the Rules for Organization of Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. The Faculty specific agenda is further specified by Active Dean's Provisions and Directives.

The most important points for students to remember are the following:

  1. The maximum permitted period of study in any study programme is 6 years for a Bachelor degree, and 5 years for a Master's degree (this is longer than the standard period of study, which is 3 years for a Bachelor degree, and 2 years for a Master's degree). The maximum study period also includes any interruptions of study. The student must graduate within this maximum study period, otherwise the study will be terminated upon reaching the date of maximum study period.

  2. Students may register for Required Classes and Recommended Electives max. twice during their study. Additional Electives from outside the list of Recommended Electives may be taken only once. If a student fails to pass a Required Class that they registered for for a second time, their studies will be terminated.

  3. Students are permitted a maximum of three attempts to take the final exam of any class in any given year. Combined with point 2, this means that students have 6 attempts in total to pass the Required Classes (2 registrations multiplied by 3 attempts). Retakes are only allowed in case the student fails the Class.

  4. Students may register for classes exclusively through the university's Student Information System (SIS), during the designated registration period (generally the first 2 weeks of the semester), using the access codes they were given at the start of their studies, together with their Charles University ID card. Students, who forget to register for a class during the standard registration period, must make a formal written request for late registration to the Student Services Office, using the official request form. Requests for late registration must be countersigned by the Academic Supervisor of the student's programme of study.

  5. Enrollment in the next year of study is conditional on students having fulfilled the specified minimum study requirement in the preceding years (credits transferred from students' previous studies at another university do not count; credits transferred from an official study abroad programme organised, e.g. Erasmus, do count). The minimum study requirements for registering in higher years of study are as follows (total credits for all previous years):
    • For Bachelor Students:
      • 45 credits to register in the second year of study
      • 90 credits to register in the third year of study
      • 135 credits to register in the fourth year of study
      • 170 credits to register in the fifth year of study
      • 170 credits to register in the sixth year of study
    • For Master's Students:
      • 45 credits to register in the second year of study
      • 90 credits to register in the third year of study
      • 110 credits to register in the fourth year of study
      • 110 credits to register in the fifth year of study

  6. Students who need clarification of any of these points should in the first instance contact the Academic Supervisor of their study programme. If this does not help, they may contact the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs.
